Lilly didn’t usually sit at the bar but tonight she needed something different. Change was in the air and she needed to find out if she was up for said change. She had been in Blood Moon Valley for so long now the idea of something else seemed wrong and her newly formed notion of leaving was not exactly pushing her to do so. However, she knew staying would result in a bloody battle and a battle that she might not win.
The vampire population of Blood Moon Valley was in flux. Times were changing and some want to embrace that change, others, are perfectly happy to keep things the way they are. Both sides have good points and even if Lilly wasn’t approaching two-hundred years old, there was going to be conflict with the powers that be but now the fact that she was approaching two-hundred meant she was going to forced to leave or push one of the other masters out.
Lilly’s clan was strong and very well trained but they were young. Far younger than the two clans she’s have to go up against. She doubted they could pull of a coup especially considering they’d be fighting on two fronts. And this was why leaving was simpler, even if it wasn’t what she wanted personally.
“What would you like ma’am?”
Being so deep in thought, Lilly shook her head and glanced up at Jock, Raven’s Perch’s bar tender extraordinaire.
“I’ll have my usual but give it splash of hot sauce.”
Jock smiled and nodded, “My pleasure.”
It was then Lilly realised she didn’t know Jock’s real age. He had showed up about fifty years ago seeking work and protection. So, he wasn’t a newbie, by any means, but Lilly could tell by his cadence and speech he wasn’t over a hundred either. Still though, older than most of the new vamps in Blood Moon Valley.
He slipped a cork coaster down on the old, hardwood bar top then placed a wine glass full of warm, red liquid on top. “There you go ma’am. Fresh today.”
Lilly raised an eyebrow and nodded. It was nice to get the good stuff without asking for it by name. Blinking her eyes at, she replied, “You are a star Jock. Thank you, I needed it today.”
He picked up a glass from the sink below and started drying it with his bar towel. “Something wrong?”
She halfway grinned. He asked in such a way it sounded genuine and by no means in that I feel compelled to ask because I am just making conversation way.
Looking up at him, she noticed his big brown eyes. Eyes that had seen more than they had probably wanted to. “You have lovely eyes Jock. Anyone ever tell you that?”
He smiled thoughtfully. “Well, my momma of course and a pretty dame in France once a while back.”
She nodded and she knew his age now, “So you were in the war huh?” She glanced over at his chisled, muscular arms. “Hmmm.. let me guess. You did something with tanks?”
He let out a big hearty laugh. “No ma’am, way too tall for that. Can you see me inside one of those tin cans?" Lilly’s forehead crinkled in thought but before she could reply he continued, “I was in the 477th Bombardment Group. You know one of those Tuskegee Airmen. I flew in the belly of a plane and dropped bombs on people.”
Both pride and regret briefly flashed over Jock’s face. There was pain in his tale as was so many of their kind.
“And that’s when you met her. The one who…”
Jock looked away but nodded in agreement.
Wanting to change the topic, Lilly took a slow sip of her drink. The warm liquid invigoration every nerve in her body. Jock had been telling the truth, it was fresh.
“Damn that is the good stuff Jock. Looked like I picked a good day to sit at the bar.”
Jock smiled again, “Always the best for you Ms. Laurent but glad you noticed.”

Lilly spun a bit on her bar stool and looked out into the club floor at all the people dancing. Taking another sip of her drink, Lilly spotted a new hottie on dance floor and grinned ear-to-ear, “Oh yes Jock. Always the best.”
